Balancing Act
Like everyone I know, I’ve got a great many things going on. In the writing realm alone, I have three different…wait, make that four different projects in the works. But in my “other world” I have a daughter getting married right before my next book releases! We are in the midst of getting invitations out, alterations, decorations and other assorted bridal chaos. And these, dear friends, are only the tip of the iceberg. There’s an enough to keep several people occupied 24/7 for a while. Don’t get me wrong. Many of these things are positive. Still it’s a lot.
I have this analogy about the way I keep these things compartmentalized. It goes like this: Imagine one of the floor-to-ceiling file cabinets that you see in a doctor’s office. Each one of those shelves (we won’t talk about the files LOL) is an aspect of my life. One is my writing responsibilities, one is for my job, one for the wedding, for my household lists, my children, husband, friends, family, etc. etc. Now, when I can focus on one drawer at a time, life is more than manageable. When I have two drawers open, I’m okay. Three, and I start to get a bit concerned. More than that and the system starts to tip over. 😊
After an exceedingly anxious day today, I was talking with a wise friend of mine about how each these “spinning plates” impacts the other. We are all aware that multi-tasking is a myth. Our brains, as fantastic as they are, can really only focus on one thing at a time. Something’s gotta give, right?
I’m trying out different strategies to cope with the management of these pieces of life, thanks to the help of another friend of mine. We’ll see what ends up working best for me.
I’m curious. What works best for you? How do you manage the many aspects of your life and maintain BALANCE? I’m not really talking about life balance, because that’s a little bigger. I’m talking about the day to day management of long(er) term projects so that you’re not overwhelmed.
Drop me a comment or send me an email! You can go to the CONNECT page on my website and do that easily.
I’m looking forward to your answers! Till next Friday….
